COMET TABUR AT ITS BEST

Question: What's the brightest comet currently visible in the sky? If you
think it's Hale-Bopp, you'll probably get an argument from seasoned comet
watchers. Comet Tabur has brightened to about magnitude 5.2, a
surprisingly nice performance. This cosmic visitor came closest to Earth
last week and is now moving among the stars of the Big Dipper. That means
observers at most northern latitudes can now see it in early evening. On
the night of the 12th it passes just north of M108. Here are Comet Tabur's
coordinates, for 0h Universal Time:

   Date R. A. Decl.
---------------------------------
October 13 11h 14.2m +55d 51'
          15 12 00.9 +55 32
          17 12 41.1 +54 18
          19 13 14.2 +52 31
COMET HALE-BOPP

Of course, Comet Hale-Bopp continues to do very well. Its magnitude is
also near 5.2. (We've gotten no confirmation that its predicted
occultation of a 9th-magnitude star on October 5th was actually observed.)
Here are this week's positions for 0 hours UT:

   Date R. A. Decl.
---------------------------------
October 13 17h 31.5m -4d 25'
          15 17 32.1 -4 19
          17 17 32.8 -4 12
          19 17 33.5 -4 6

以上です。
