Recently handled the not-yet-announced AF-Nikkor 70-180 f/3.5-5.6D
Zoom
Micro-Nikkor.  It's a true micro-nikkor that zooms.  Repro ratio at
180mm
is 1:1.33.  Two-touch zoom with tripod collar.  62mm filter diameter.
Internal zoom and focus.  Somewhat smaller than the new 80-200/2.8,
but
very similar in materials, finish, and execution (i.e. very high
quality).
They wouldn't let me take pictures with it because it was a pre-
production
model, so I can't say how sharp etc.  They said it would be announced
in
late summer/early fall, but gave no delivery information.  I would
guess
not until 1998.  Also would not give a price, but it obviously won't
be
cheap.  Seems to me that medical and industrial shooters should start
salivating, not to mention nature guys with money.
